MEGAN IS RUNNER UP IN THE SCOTTISH UNDER 21 GIRLS STROKEPLAY AND EILIDH WINS THE MENZIES CUP FOR THE BEST UNDER 18 YEAR OLD

Kelsey MacDonald and Eildh Briggsw
Stirling University student Kelsey MacDonald (pictured above with Renfrewshire County Champion -- Eilidh Briggs) finished top of the class for the third year in a row in the Scottish Under-21 girls open amateur stroke-play golf championship at Dunfermline Golf Club today.
The 19-year-old Scottish women’s champion from the Nairn Dunbar club signed off in champion style with a two-under-par 70, the joint lowest round of the tournament, for a one-over-par total of 217.
That gave her a four-stroke winning margin from last year’s Scottish Women’s Champion, Renfrewshire's Megan Briggs (Kilmacolm) (72-271) with Gillian Monteith (Portpatrick Dunskey) giving her best performance in a national tournament to finish third on 272, also closing with a 72.
Megan had a little bit of everything in her round today - an eagle 3 at the long 15th, birdies at the long seventh, 11th, long 17th and long 18th and then, on the downside, a double bogey 5 at the short 16th and other bogeys at the fourth, eighth, 10th and 14th in halves of 36.
She fought well to try an recover from her one bad hole in the 1st round of the tournament when she had a 5 over par 9 at the 6th.

Eilidh Briggs, our Renfrewshire champion, finished fourth with a 77 for 225 and won the Menzies Cup for the best performance over the three rounds by an Under-18 year old.

Well done to Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) who finished with a great 76 to shoot up the leader board into 7th Place --- Well done Alyson.

Natasha Qayum (Ranfurly Castle) had a superb round of 75 to end up in 17th place at the end of play.

Also well done to Linsey Stevenson (40th) and young Renfrewshire Junior Alexandra Qayum

MEGAN, EILIDH AND ALYSON ALL IMPROVE ON DAY 2 OF THE UNDER 21 SCOTTISH GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Both Megan and Eilidh are in the hunt for the 2010 Scottish Junior Open Stroke Play Championship with one round to go. Younger sister Eilidh is one shot behind defending champion, Kelsey MacDonald with one round to go with Megan one shot further back.

Both sisters closed the gap on the round 1 leader, Kelsey with level par rounds of 72 after Kelsey followed up her opening round of 72 with a 75.

Megan was out in 33 this morning having a par 4 at the 6th Hole where she had a nine yesterday to be 2 under par at the turn. Unfortunately she had a couple of bogeys in the inward half to slightly spoil this great round. However, her 72 was 2 under the CSS of 74 today !!

Eilidh also had a great round --- She had a 72 -- the same as her sister !!

Alyson had 2 birdies in her inward half and had a gross 74 to move her up from 31st place to 9th place after today's round

MEGAN HAS A NINE AT THE SCOTTISH UNDER 21 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIPS BUT RECOVERS WELL

Despite having a 9 at the 6th hole in the Scottish Under-21 Girls’ Open Amateur Stroke-Play Golf Championship at Dunfermline Golf Club today Megan Briggs had 4 birdies in her round to help limit the damage with a 5 over par 77.The Pitfirrane course was so sodden by heavy rain that there was an hour’s delay at one point to allow the excess water to subside so it was a hard day for all the players
Younger sister Elidh finished one stroke better with a 76 and Natasha Qayum had 78

ENTER THE AUGUST MEDAL OVER GOUROCK -- DRAW CLOSES ON TUESDAY

Gourock Golf Club -- Click to enlarge
The next Medal is, as you know, at Gourock on Thursday 5th August (Post Code for those with Sat Nav PA19 1HD). Closing date for entries is Tuesday 20th July and Ballot official for this competition is Tricia Davidson.

There are only 23 entries so far which is disappointing as the tee has been booked for 2 1/2 hrs. I know it is a bit of a distance for some of you to travel but could you please consider entering if you possibly can as it is good to support the Clubs who are kind enough to give us courtesy of their course. As I have said before, the views at Gourock are spectacular especially on a good day (sorry I cannot guarantee the weather - I would love too!!!). --- Click here to see the 2005 County Medal over Gourock

I really hope you will consider playing at Gourock. Remember to check your time just before the competition in case of any last minute changes that need to be made.

Cheers Morag Turner (RLCGA Secretary)

EILIDH LOSES IN THE QUARTER FINALS OF THE SCOTTISH GIRLS

On a very windy morning at Eyemouth Golf Club, there were several hock results in the quarter-finals of the Scottish girls championship.
Rachael Watton, hot favourite to win the title after being the leading qualifier by 11 strokes for the match-play stages lost by 3 and 1 to fellow Lothians player Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe).
It was Kate's second big scalp of the week. The No 25 qualifier beat Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) at the 19th in the second round.
After a day of shock results at windswept Eyemouth, Kate will now play the No 3 seed, Lesley Atkins (Gullane), in an all-Lothians 18-hole final of the Scottish girls’ championship tomorrow morning.
Lesley Atkins, a pupil a Loretto School, Musselburgh and originally a member of Minto Golf Club when she was the youngest-ever Borders women's county champion, upset the form book in the morning with a 5 and 3 win over the No 2 seed and Renfrewshire women’s county champion Eilidh Briggs (Kilmacolm).
In the afternoon, Atkins was roughly seven over par for the outward half into the gale but had a lead of two holes over the No 3 seed, Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw). MacDonald rallied in the closing stages from three to one down by winning the 15th and 16th but she four-putted to lose the 17th and the match 2 and 1.
All four semi-finalists are young enough to compete again in next year’s championship which is unusual – McIntosh is 16, Atkins 15, MacDonald 17 and Dryburgh 17.
The Ansley Reid Salver second-tier match-play competition - Kate McIntosh won it last year, incidentally - was won this year by Rachel Hanlon (St Regulus), the East of Scotland girls champion who was expected to qualify for the main event but didn’t. She beat Hannah Scott (Broomieknowe) 3 and 2 in the final.
Afternoon results:

Kate McIntosh (Broomieknowe) bt Gemma Dryburgh (IMG Academies) 6 and 5.
Lesley Atkins (Gullane) bt Gabrielle MacDonald (Craigielaw) 2 and 1.

EILIDH AND ALYSON AT THE EUROPEAN U18 TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

Renfrewshire's Eilidh Briggs and Alyson McKechin are representing Scotland in the 2010 European U18 Team Championships at Aalborg, Denmark.
Scotland are not well placed after the 1st Qualifying Round today.
Rachael Watton with a six-over-par 77 (41-36) was the best of the four, following by Germany-based Rachael Taylor 80 (40-40) and Eilidh Briggs 82 (44-38) and Alyson McKechin 82 (39-43).
The Scots are lying in 16th place on 239. The teams currently sharing seventh place -Belgium and England - are on 224, which shows how much the Scottish girls would have to improve to make into the top eight who go forward to the championship match-play flight.
The Scots look destined for one of the lower flights.
