PAST RENFREWSHIRE COUNTY CHAMPION CLARE MARIE MACAULAY IS MOVING TO PAISLEY GOLF CLUB

Callum and Claire Marie Macaulay
Clare-Marie Macaulay (nee Carlton) married Golf Pro Callum (pictured above) two years ago. Clare-Marie who had won the RLCGA County Championship in 2003  turned to the pro ranks shortly before she got married and has now decided it is time to move from Playsport to Paisley Golf club

Clare - Marie
Clare-Marie says
"Having spent 4 great years at
Playsport Golf in which time I developed as a PGA Professional, in particular my coaching skills, I feel it’s time to move on to pastures new.

I’ve just completed my final exams of the PGA Foundation degree and all going well I should be a PGA qualified professional in a few months time.
I have decided to take up a full-time position at Paisley Golf Club where I will be working alongside my brother Andy.

I’ll be based in the pro shop offering my retail golfing services coupled with a comprehensive coaching programme for all abilities, with a slight bias to ladies and juniors

As a youngster, Renfrewshire County were great with me and helped me develop my game and I want to encourage more girls within Renfrewshire to take up the game. Therefore I am organising a ‘Girls try Golf’ afternoon on Saturday 11th May (11.30am-1.00pm) to allow girls to have an opportunity to try the game for free.
If you know anyone that would be interested in coming along please send me an email at cmmacaulay@hotmail.co.uk or phone the pro shop on 0141 884 4114.

DONNA DOES IT AGAIN!!

Donna and Gillian on the 1st tee at 8am
The final of Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Association Championship was played at 8am today on a bright but chilly Kilmacolm Golf Club.

Donna Jackson, the number 2 qualifier, played Vice Captain Gillian McGinlay, who crept in at number 8 on the qualifying list.  Cochrane Castle should be delighted that two of their stalwart members have represented them so well.

The final was refereed by Kilmacolm Club Captain Colin Christy who remarked several times on the brisk pace of the golf game.  That may have had something to do with the chilly morning, or the fact Gill has a Club qualifying medal this afternoon - or indeed that Donna and her Caddie Liz Stewart are heading off to Spain this afternoon - or maybe all of the above!

Donna was first to take a hole, at the 2nd with a par but Gillian pulled it back at the third hole for the match to go back to square.

Donna's magnificent second shot to the fourth was so close Gillian conceeded the birdie and Donna was back up again.  Gillian then produced the birdie goods at the next to win the hole and we were back to square playing the sixth.

Gillian found some bush/tree/bush trouble at the long par 3 sixth and conceeded, Donna back to one up.

Gillian found some more trouble down the left of the next hole and at the end, Donna was 2 up and found another good par at 9 to be three up at the turn.

Gillian gave herself a shake and played the 10th in textbook fashion to pull back a hole.  The next four holes were halved then a solid par four at the fifteenth gave Donna the dormey.

There were excellent drives by both players at the next but it was Donna who grabbed the bull by the horns (something she may do in Spain this coming week!) and played an absolute stunner onto the green while Gill's approach came up short.  Gill really had to hole her pitch but again came up short of the hole and sportingly shook hands with Donna on the green.  The final result being a win for Donna 4/2.

A small group of supporters started off proceedings at 8am (actually only 6 and two of them were caddies) but a few more came out to join us.

Gillian McGinlay has to be congratulated for playing some strong golf this week - especially as the last couple of years have seen her battling injury after injury.  However, she's back and we'd better look out!!

Donna can now sit back on the plane to sunny Spain with a contented smile on her face and a small glass of bubbly in her hand to celebrate a truely remarkable County Golfing achievement.  She has played in and for her County for 30 years and her commitment and dedication to RLCGA cannot be overstated.  She is of the old school - those who just get on with it, she lets her clubs do the talking - and they have been talking loud and clear for those 30 years.  Well done again Donna!!

IT’S GILLIAN AND DONNA IN THE FINAL (AGAIN!)

What a difference a day makes........ Weather-wise, today we are most definitely in Spring.

Iona and Gillian
Denise and Tracy
The quarter finals were played this morning with top qualifier Iona Stephen playing Vice-Captain Gillian McGinlay in the top match. The game was played in a very sporting manner with the competitors acknowledging good play by each other. Iona was never ahead but pegged Gillian back repeatedly. A terrific up and down par 3 for Iona at the 17 got the game back to all square playing 18. Gillian played short of the green in two but Iona pushed her second shot out of bounds and a five was enough for Gillian to progress to the afternoon Semi-Final.

The second game out was Peggy Clark Trophy winner Tracy Masterton (Windyhill), who plays off 13 and had it all to do against 6-handicapper Denise Cowan of Ranfurly Castle. Denise played terrific golf and was par for the first 10 holes. Tracy had a great five down the 11th but lost the 12th to go dormey. The 13th was halved in pars and Denise ran out the winner. Really terrific golf by both players.
Carol Whyte, Gillian Kyle, Donna Jackson and Liz Stewart

The second half of the draw had four fellow RLCGA team mates pitted against each other.
Gillian Kyle and Carol Whyte played good solid golf but once Gillian got her nose in front it was always going to be difficult for Carol to catch up. Gillian won the match with some fine play.
The bottom match saw the Battle of the Giants – Liz Stewart against Donna Jackson. The two friends and team partners were nip and tuck all the way to the 18th with never more than one or two in it. Donna was very happy to see her winning putt drop on the 18th green to take her to the Semi Final.

In the afternoon, the sunny weather continued and the top game was Gillian McGinlay against Denise Cowan. Denise got off to a sparkling start and several pars saw her 2 up through four holes. It rocked between two up and one up for Denise in the next few holes then Gillian produced a couple of birdies at 12 and 14 to move to 1 up for the first time in the match. Denise showed her grit and won the next two holes to gain the advantage playing 17. Gillian had a fantastic ‘up and down’ from a tricky lie on the right of the green and that took the game back to square playing 18.
Good drives by both players were followed by two slack second shots although both players had fine shots to the 18th green. Denise putted first and ran her putt a fair bit passed. Gillian, on the other hand, left her putt an agonising six or seven inches short. Denise played a decent enough second putt but it just sat on the edge of the hole – game won, Gillian. Congratulations to both players who had a fine sporting match.

The other second semi-final involved the evergreen Donna Jackson and Gillian ‘skippy’ Kyle. Donna must have had something in her soup at lunch time because she stormed off to a four hole lead after only four holes. A half at the next stopped the rot for Gillian and by the 9th she had got Donna back to being only one up.
Good solid golf by Donna saw the lead creeping up and a birdie on 13 saw her back to 3 up. A par at the 14th then again at the 15 saw her win 4 and 3. As Gillian knows, you can’t let Donna get even half a chance as she’s got the game and the experience to take full advantage. Both players are to be commended for the friendly way in which they played.

That takes us to tomorrow for the Final on a Saturday for the first time anyone can remember!!
Donna and Gillian McGinlay last played a County Final way, way back at Cowglen in 2005 when Donna won her last championship.
It looks like it’s going to be a great final tomorrow with the two Cochrane Castle members battling it out - in the sunshine (hopefully). Come along and support them – after you’ve had your breakfast!!

Quarter-finals - Gillian McGinlay (Cochrane Castle) bt Iona Stephen (Ranfurly Castle) 1 hole, Denise Cowan (Ranfurly Castle) bt Tracy Masterton (Windyhill) 3 and 1, Gillian Kyle (East Renfrewshire) bt Carol Whyte (Windyhill) 3 and 1, Donna Jackson (Cochrane Castle) bt Liz Stewart (Greenburn) 1 hole.Semi-finals - McGinlay bt Cowan 1 hole, Jackson bt Kyle 4 and 3.

Despite afternoon conditions being dreadful with torrential rain both Donna and Clare- Marie played an enthralling match in near par scoring play The match lasted until the 23rd hole when Donna struck a wayward shot to ruin her chances of gaining her 10th Championship title.

The old website ran through until 2006 and then the world of "BLOGGING" helped allowing other members of the committee to put on posts onto the website.

Carol then set up a Photographic page which now has over 300 albums since 2007 and a Video Channel which now has over 200 videos on it. -- These albums and videos also include golf outside Renfrewshire (West of Scotland, West Vets, Ranfurly Castle, Douglas Park , Curtis Cup, Scottish Seniors and more)
The County Centenary Book was published in 2009.
and another photo book printed in 2010 when the County Team became the Scottish Team Champions and this was given to Past captain Trish Brown -- click on the links of each book to reveal more

In 2012 even a Facebook page for mainly Junior News was also set up.

I would like to thank all who have contributed to the website either by sending  photos or a snippit of news.
However, I would personally like to thank Past Captain Christeen Finlayson for her tremendous input in the Centenary year -- For some one who said she was no use with computers she certainly put on lots of posts and of course was a fantastic help in the proof reading and input into the book.

I would also like  to give special mention to Freda Tuck who works with me quietly in the background, keeping the draws and entries and results of the competitions all going.

Hopefully with more input the website will continue to attract visitors from Renfrewshire and all around Scotland.
