ALYSON WINS THE COUNTY ROSEBOWL

Jackie McDonald, Captain of Paisley Golf Club Jim Brown and Alyson McKechin
The County Rosebowl Final was played today at Paisley Golf Club and what a game it was.
Alyson McKechin (Elderslie) had to give  Jackie McDonald (Ranfurly Castle) 19 shots.
However Alyson's outward half was absolutely sparkling with birdies galore with her score being well under par and at the turn she was 6 up !
However, Jackie put up a brave fight and after winning the long 10th she gave the thumbs up to say all was not lost. She then promptly won the 11th, 12th, and 13th to be only 2 down going the the 14th.
They then halved the next 2 holes and then at the 17th Jackie had a fight with a bunker and had to concede the match.
Captain Jim Crawford of Paisley Golf Club then presented the trophy to Alyson at the end of the game.
Well done to you both --- it was a great final

COUNTY FINALS -- A MESSAGE FROM CAPTAIN TRISH

RLCGA Scottish County Champions -- Click to enlarge

The 2010 Scottish County Champions Renfrewshire --- Click to enlarge

I am back from the fabulous Scottish County Finals at Bothwell Castle in Lanarkshire and am so thrilled that it is third time lucky for Renfrewshire! We WON the COUNTY FINALS for the first time in 23 years and I want to congratulate my super team for their great effort. They all contributed to this success in their own way and I cannot thank them enough for making this old lady very happy!
The tournament was run extremely efficiently by Clare Hargan, Dawn Butchart was our starter and Fiona Farqharson and Winnifred McCallum were the official referees.....to all of these ladies we owe our thanks.
Thankyou to all the caddies and the supporters who gave up their precious time to come. It was a great help and we also appreciated very much the effort some of the other West counties made in donning some PINK!
Bothwell Castle was a great venue.....a fabulous clubhouse with cheery, helpful staff and a lovely parkland course where it was easy to spectate (and not too hilly!). We thank them for their generous hospitality.
We had some very tight matches especially on Friday with Midlothian and today with Dumfries-shire and we thank them and Angus for their sportsmanship and the friendly manner in which the ties were played. Congratulations to Midlothian for being runners up for the 2nd time in a row.
Finally ....what a team we have! They have all given their best but I would like especially to thank CLARE-MARIE CARLTON who has now played her last game for Renfrewshire.
She has been a great team member but as from tomorrow she will join the Professional Golf Association as she undertakes her 3 year training as a teaching pro. GOOD LUCK CLARE-MARIE!
Well that's it for another year. All the hard work and effort has payed off and I am sure all the RLCGA members are very proud of a wonderful County Team......THANK YOU!

PS Carol has lots more photos but is at the Scottish Vets Jamboree this week!
She will put them on the web when she gets home later this week

WE ARE THE COUNTY CHAMPIONS

Your webmaster has sent these photos from her phone. Sorry that's the best I can do at the moment. I am on my way to Blairgowrie to the Scottish Vets Jamboree. Will not be able to put on photos till my return

Report From Colin Farquharson

Renfrewshire are Scottish women's county champions for the first time this Century! The last time they won the title was 1987, before some of the present team members were born.
On the third and final day at Bothwell Castle, Renfrewshire beat Dumfries-shire 5 1/2-3 1/2 while Midlothian beat Angus 7-2.
That meant a tie between Renfrewshire and Midlothian - who had drawn their opening-day match 4 1/2-4 1/2 - with 2 1/2pt each. The tie-breaker was a countback of individual game won (not counting halved games).
Renfrewshire shaded that 16 to 15.
Renfrewshire's Alyson McKechin was the MVP (Most Valuable Player) of the tournament with five wins out of six. Her only defeat was in the opening day foursomes.
The champions also got 4pt out of 6 from Megan Briggs and 3 1/2pt out of four from Clare-Marie Carlton who did not play on the first day.
Midlothian's top points winner was Jane Turner with 4 1/2 out of six. Closely followed by young Gabrielle MacDonald with 4pt from five games, and Karen Marshall with 4pt from six.
The mainstay of the Angus team was teenager Jessica Meek with 4 1/2pt out of six while top scorer for Dumfries-shire was Diane Ma\cDonald with 3 1/2pt, having lost only one of her six outings.

FROM THE SLGA WEBSITE:
The outcome was far from certain until the second last match on the course was finished. Midway through the afternoon Renfrewshire looked like they could struggle to win the three points needed from the singles matches to seal the win against Dumfriesshire with only Gillian Kyle up in her match.
Clare-Marie Carlton started the come-back by halving her match with Diane MacDonald with a pitch-and-putt birdie 4 on the 18th.
Megan Briggs and Alyson McKechin both then won their respective matches by two holes, having each been down for much of the afternoon.
Giliian Kyle duly won her match, giving Renfrewshire a 5.5 - 3.5 win in the match and 16 individual match wins from the three days.
With Midlothian sitting on 10 individual match wins going into the afternoon singles that meant that they had to win all six of their matches to tie Renfrewshire on the number of match wins and take it to a further count back. With all but one of the Midlothian team all square or down going into the back nine it looked like their chance was all but over.
However, like Renfrewshire, the Midlothian team fought back with wins from Rachael Watton and Gabrielle Macdonald by one hole and by Kate McIntosh on the 17th.
Louise Fraser who had been the one match up all afternoon, won her match, leaving Karen Marshall and Jane Turner needing to win their matches. Karen Marshall sank a gutsy putt to win the 18th hole against Jessica Meek, however it was to halve the match, which meant that Renfrewshire's win was confirmed.
Congratulations to all the players and captains on an excellent three days of golf, played in great spirit and many congratulations to Renfrewshire on their first County Finals win since 1987.

Renfrewshire beat Angus by 7 points to 2 while Midlothian beat Dumfriesshire by 6.5 points to 2.5 in the second day of matches at Bothwell Castle Golf Club today (Saturday 18 September).
Both Renfrewshire and Midlothian have one match win and one half going in to the final day while Angus have one win. Each of these three teams could still win the County Finals, however Angus have to hope that Dumfriesshire beat Renfrewshire to give them a chance of winning the title. RENFREWSHIRE RALLIES TO HAVE A BRILLIANT HALVED MATCH AGAINST MIDLOTHIAN

Liz Stewart is congratulated by Captain Trish, Donna and Vice Captain Maureen after sinking her putt on the 18th to half the match against Midlothians --- Click to enlarge

After losing the Foursomes 3 - 0 against Midlothian this morning in the County Finals at Bothwell Castle it looked like it was going to be a bad Day for Renfrewshire.
However what excitement was to follow.-- Megan led the team with a terrific win against fellow Internationalist Jane Turner by winning her match by holing her third shot from 60 yards for an eagle 3 at the long 18th.
Eilidh had a fantastic win against Rachael Watton and Donna and Alyson then both won to allow us to be 4 - 3 up.
Then Baberton’s experienced campaigner Karen Marshall stopped the slide by winning her match by 3 and 2 against Carol Whyte, that meant the teams were left at 4 points apiece.
Liz Stewart who had been 1 down against Wendy Nicholson for much of the match and had chipped and putted magnificently continued to do so at the 15th, 16th and 17th to remain 1 down going down the 18th Hole. However, she again pitched and putted to save par at the last and Wendy’s par putt to win the tie and give Midlothian overall victory just missed, leaving the teams tied at 4 1/2pt each.

Angus beat Dumfries-shire 6 ½, - 2 ½ to be top of the table at this stage.

Bev New
from Lansdown, Somerset, is the new Senior British ladies’ open amateur champion.
Making her debut in the tournament after reaching the eligibility age of 50, the former Ladies European Tour player who won the English title and Curtis Cup honours as an amateur, shot the low round of the championship today to come through to snatch victory from joint fifth overnight, four shots off the pace.
Bev had rounds of 78, 84 and 73 for 19 over par 235 – scores that reflect how bad the conditions were for much of the three days of the championship.
The over-20mph wind of the first day returned, increasing in intensity from noon.
New, who had been joint first-round leader on 78 with Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool,) packed four birdies into her brilliant, wind-cheating final round.
Unfortunately Maureen had a poor inward half to finish off her chance of winning the title.

RLCGA HONORARY MEMBER MAUREEN RICHMOND (WALKER) STILL LEADS THE BRITISH SENIORS AFTER THE SECOND ROUND AT WEST KILBRIDE

Scottish Girls Team 1972 - Royal Norwich Golf Club: L to R - Gladys Cadden, Suzanne Cadden, Lorna Bennett, Muriel Thomson, Kathleen Lackie (Captain) Maureen Walker, Susan Kennedy, Elaine Fraser and Catherine Panton - click to enlarge

Renfrewshire's Honorary Member Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond (nee Walker), a Curtis Cup player, British and Scottish girls champion in her youth and now a GP at Wallasey, is one good round away from adding to a glittering golfing CV that has been virtually dormant since she became a GP several decades ago.
At the end of a long, long day – the start of play was delayed 2hr 15min until 45mph early-morning winds abated – Dr Richmond and her playing partners finished their second rounds almost in darkness at 7.45pm.
Maureen added an 80 to her opening round of 78 and her 36-hole tally of 158 gives her a one-stroke lead from England’s Caroline Marron (Bromborough), recent winner of the English seniors’ stroke-play title, and Ireland’s Helen Jones (Strabane), winner last week by six strokes of the Irish senior women’s open amateur championship.

Another Past Renfrewshire Member in the picture after 36 holes is Ladybank’s European seniors team hero Lorna Bennett with a 79 for 163 --- (See the RLCGA Centenary Book Page 39 --- both Maureen and Lorna together in 1972 in the Scottish Girls' Team --- see picture above)

The field was cut to 40 and ties for tomorrow’s final round. Players had to have two-round aggregates of 173 or better to survive.

GILLIAN IS A TOP CHAMPION --- HERE ARE SOME MORE CHAMPIONS

It has been agreat month for Renfrewshire's Gillian Kyle, who claimed not one, but two club championship titles. Gillian is now Ladies Club Champion at both Troon and East Renfrewshire Golf Club, truly a remarkable achievement.
Gillian has won the East Renfrewshire title for the 14th time !!
Congratulations Gillian from all at Renfrewshire Ladies' County Golf Association.

Also congratulations go to Lesley Cosh who won the Cowglen Championship, Janette McCartney who won the Erskine Championship, Nicky Henderson the Haggs Castle Club Championship and Anne Robinson the Ranfurly Castle Championship.

Vice Captain Maureen Woodhead
was Champion at Gourock Golf Club for 15 years consecutively up until 2008 when she lost in the semi finals. However I have just been informed that she has won again this year again to make it 17 times !!

Any advance on 17 years, then? --- Not sure if this is correct but I am sure I will be informed if it is wrong!!

Message from Maureen --- The figure of 17 is correct! However, I think mention should be made that I have only equalled Elspeth Hanlon's record of 17 wins at Gourock. She's also been Champion of I don't know how many other courses!!

On Saturday 11th September Gillian Mullen won the Club Championship title at Paisley for the 8th consecutive time.

Morag Key won the Ralston Club Championship for the 10th time. Would be good to have a champions day somewhere. Mar Hall would be neutral! --- Sounds a good Suggestion --- Janette

Guess who of course for Greenock - Linda McDougall.---- Thanks Mo

Latest News: The Old Course Ranfurly's Lady Champion is Marion Downie. This is a new name on our Trophy and she is one of our 'newer' members who has now got her handicap down to 10!
Also Caldwell's Christine Wilson and Cochrane Castle's Champ is Alyson McGinnigle

Renfrewshire Club Champions :
Caldwell - Christine Wilson
Cochrane Castle - Alyson McGinnigle
Cowglen - Lesley Cosh
East Renfrewshire - Gillian Kyle
Erskine - Janette McCartney

HONORARY RLCGA MEMBER MAUREEN RICHMOND LEADS THE BRITISH SENIORS AT WEST KILBRIDE

Maureen Richmond -- Click to enlarge
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Eight Scots in the leading 20 of the Senior British women’s open amateur stroke-play golf championship at the end of a storm-lashed day at West Kilbride was a good effort on the part of the home brigade.
Winds of up to 50mphlashing rain a hailstorm … it was all there in North Ayrshire.

At the end of day that was more like January than mid-September, Renfrewshire's Kilmacolm exile Maureen Richmond (Royal Liverpool), pictured above by Cal Carson Golf Agency, and another former Curtis Cup player, Bev New from Somerset were the only two players to break 80.
They go into the second of three rounds sharing the pole position on six-over-par 78, one over the CSS (Reduction only).
Maureen Richmond, a GP at Wallasey, is better remembered as Mo Walker, the teenager who won Curtis Cup and Vagliano Trophy honours, the British Girls Championship and three Scottish girls titles – and then, at the age of 19 entered medicine, virtually ringing down the curtain on what could have been a fabulous golf career. --- (See page 54 of the Renfrewshire Centenary Book for more details)
“I only play in one big event a year – this one,” said 55-year-old Maureen. “I just can’t take time off from being a GP.
“How did I get it round in 78? In weather as bad as this you just have to get your head down and make the best of it. No point in feeling sorry for yourself. Just get on with it. And it helped that I am still pretty long off the tee.”

SCOTLAND WIN THE HOME INTERNATIONAL FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE 1991 AND MEGAN PLAYS HER PART

Scottish Winning Home Team - Click to enlarge The winning Scotland team and SLGA officials (including Past Captain Beth Paterson) after the presentation in the Whitchurch clubhouse (image by Cal Carson Golf Agency -- click on it to enlarge)

FROM THE LGU WEBSITE
Scotland has won the Home International Matches championship for the first time since 1991.
In a nerve-tingling finish to the three days, and on an afternoon on non-stop rain, the Scots beat Ireland 5-4 in the title-decider.
“It’s a great feeling to be taking the title back to Scotland,” said team captain Lesley Nicholson. “It went right down to the wire and my players were great.”
The Scots took a 2-1 lead from the morning foursomes and shared the singles 3-3.
The fifth and winning point for Scotland was delivered by Pamela Pretswell who beat Curtis Cup team-mate Leona Maguire with a birdie at the last hole.
Ireland cancelled out Scotland’s one-point lunchtime lead when Danielle McVeigh beat Jane Turner by 6 and 5. McVeigh was three up after four holes, having birdied the second, third and fourth, and she never relinquished her grip on the outcome. Turner won only one hole, the fifth, against a Curtis Cup player in top form. McVeigh increased her lead with wins at the sixth, 11th, 12th and 13th.
Scotland edged ahead 3-2 with a two-hole win by Kelsey MacDonald over Mary Dowling in a battle of the Scottish and Irish champions.
There was never more than a hole in it until the 18th green with first one player, then the other having a one-hole lead. All square after 15 holes, MacDonald won the 16th with a par 4, halved the 17th and birdied the 18th for a two-hole win.
Dowling had birdies at the fourth, 11th and 13th. MacDonald had an eagle 3 at the fifth and that birdie at the last.
Louise Kenney increased Scotland’s overall advantage to 4-2 when she beat Sinead O’Sullivan by 3 and 2, having been three up at the turn and four ahead after 12
Then Ireland won a third point through Charlene Reid who beat Megan Briggs by 2 and 1. Two down after 11, Charlene turned the match around by winning the 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th and 17th, with a birdie.
But Scotland got the title-winning fifth point when Pamela Pretswell beat Leona Maguire by one hole, thanks to a pitch-and-putt birdie 4 at the long 18th. It had been a classic match-play encounter with Pretswell two up after five but two down after 11 to the resurgted Leona. Pretswell won the 12th and 13th to square the match but slipped one down again when Maguire won the 15th with a birdie 2.
The Scot squared the match with a 4 at the 16th, halved the 17th and then produced that all-important birdie at the 18th.
Lisa Maguire rang the curtain down on a tremendous afternoon’s play by both teams when she won by one hole against Rachael Watton. There was never more than a hole in either way.

CAMPBELL CLOCK - EMMA KENNEDY IS THE WINNER

Emma Kennedy is presented with the Campbell Clock by Whitecraigs Captain Elizabeth Hall

The Renfrewshire Ladies’ County Open Junior Stableford Competition was played over Whitecraigs Golf Course this afternoon in lovely weather.

The course was in excellent condition and we are indebted to the Committee and members of Whitecraigs GC for allowing us so many starting times on the ‘big’ course and also the Par 3 course.

Thirty six girls played in the 3 different competitions and it was great to see them mixing socially and enjoying the atmosphere.
Helpers accompanied the groups playing the short course and also the girls playing in the 8 hole event. Their help was greatly appreciated as they helped the girls to work out Stableford points, looked for wayward shots and explained rules and etiquette !

Congratulations to all the prizewinners, especially Emma Kennedy from Paisley GC who won the lovely Campbell Clock Trophy for the best score of 35 points over 18 holes.
